Rite Aid’s shutdown is not just the story of another corporate bankruptcy — it’s a symptom of a systemic problem. The retail pharmacy landscape has been deteriorating for years, and those of us on the front lines have watched the quality of care we provide to patients decline steadily. A major cause is the continued reduction in insurance reimbursements, making it nearly impossible to operate sustainably.
Even more troubling is the consolidation happening through vertical acquisitions — where insurers, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), and large retailers are merging or colluding — squeezing out independent pharmacies and now even national chains like Rite Aid. These monopolistic dynamics are crushing small business owners and stripping communities of access to local, reliable care.
