Saagar really does strike me as someone with a fair degree of intelligence, which is why I find it so baffling when he gets on some subject and just refuses to employ his mental faculties. For example: on yesterday's show, he got himself to a point where he just threw up his hands and said: "I guess these [Portland residents] are just ok with crime."
This has all of the analytical power of a child sitting on the floor, trying repeatedly to smash the square block into the round hole, then after about 15 minutes looking up, adjusting their tie, and saying: "I guess these plebians prefer squalor."
Even at an extremely surface level, it's not hard to come to the conclusion: even if people living in the city dislike being surrounded by crime (or, more generally, social disfunction), the reason they don't turn to 'tough on crime' is because THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT POLICING IS CAPABLE OF FIXING THE SOCIAL DISFUNCTION. You can disagree with that conclusion, you can make an intelligent argument ...
