The segment on DC crime was full of just outright lies by Sagaar.
1) There's never been a policy in DC to not prosecute all kids. Kids under 15 can't be prosecuted as adults, but there is NO age limit for prosecution in DC (along with 45 other states) in youth court. Rehabilitation is the focus of youth court, but thats decades old Supreme Court precedent.
2) Kids who are 15 can be prosecuted as an adult with judicial waiver, and kids 16 and up can be prosecuted as an adult on a prosecutors prerogative. Any time a child, or an adult, is given a non prosecution offer, we have to look at the specifics of the case! The case could be weak (Constitutional problems, witness problems, evidence problems), the kid/adults could be a first Offender, or the judge could just be feeling generous.
3) While there have been several pieces of youth justice reform that do favor rehabilitation over incarceration, that is explicitly what the youth system is, by law, supposed to focus on. What Sagaar, and most conservatives conflate, is that these diversion programs are for lower level (theft, drugs, fights at school, and yes, truancy). Is Sagaar's preference that 13 year old who commit petty theft get 5 years in youth custody?
4) Saying "the Ferguson effect is statistically proven" is moronic. It's like saying "the sun rose, then 9/11 happened, therefore the sun rising caused 9/11." Its correlation not causation and ignores that crime went up, as Krystal points out, in "tough on crime" places. The Brennan Center has found no relation between progressive prosecution or bail reform and increase in crime rates.
5) States like Louisiana, which have much, much, much worse rates of youth crime, do everything Sagaar wants and yet nothing has changed. States like Massachusetts, which have much, much, much lower rates of youth crime, does everything Sagaar calls dumb and woke when it comes to youth crime.
Full disclosure, I am in law school, will become a public defender, and I host a podcast about public defense, criminal law, and criminal law policy, so I am biased, but the segements of crime on the show are some of the worst informed of any the show covers. Much of the issue in DC youth justice is that the diversionary/Rehabilitation programs have never been funded. Kids were in custody for more than 3 months before they could start a program, and out of custody even longer. Just like adults, being incarcerated has a criminogenic effect (it increases, not decreases future offending rates) and its even worse in kids! Actual studies about what works for kids are clear, non carceral options work better for kids, but that doesnt mean its 100% effective, but it is more effective than long prison sentences then releasing a person at 30 who grew up in jail!

I’m glad Saager covered the most recent pushes to abolish the property tax. My position is that property taxes should stay but should be changed so as to minimize their distortionary effects. Would love for yall to have on Lars Doucet or another proponent of the Land Value Tax/Georgism.
Please look further into Wesley Bell and his violent security assault on constituents the other night. This is what happens to the civilians in the US that continue to bend the knee to AIPAC and Israel.
I may get attacked for this, but every time we're covering Ukraine, I get a yucky feeling. Yes, I agree with everything you all say. But I feel the part that is lacking is that the Ukrainian people don't deserve this. And they seem to be forgotten when we discuss all of the ways the war has been horrible. Especially considering it's basically our fault. They're people too, who are being used as pawns, and it's just so sad. I feel like that point isn't addressed enough. I understand all of it is f**ked and the ways Zelenskyy has made it worse by not conceding and the money we send and blah blah. But people are not their governments. And innocent civilians are constantly being killed there still. And when it's being discussed, it feels insensitive. Just my opinion as someone with friends over there helping. I know of one that would probably love to speak to you all, too. He truly knows his stuff. And all of the small groups training and providing medical care and evacuations, they see ...
